Betty Jin

Hi, everyone. My name is Betty jin. I graduated from California College of the Arts in May 2021. During my school year, I gained a bachelor's degree in Industrial design and a minor in Computational Practice.

Here is a little bit about me.

I am very lazy.

I am very lazy which makes me an industrial designer. Since I was a kid, it is so annoying to do a lot of things. It is such troublesome work to throw my cloth into laundry baskets, have to open the door by myself when I am watching TV, have to brush my teeth to keep my teeth clean. All of these make me think about what can I do to simplify steps and allows me to be lazy. As a lazy person, I always tend to find a problem or solution that can make the process more efficient.

I hate digital devices.

I often don’t know how to use a function in digital devices compare to my peers which makes me an industrial designer. When there are new functions or digital products out, I have problems figuring out how to use them like an old grandma. Because of this, it makes me the suitable person to find the digital product problem. When I was a freshmen year in CCA, I give a lot of advice to my college to optimize their websites and pieces of equipment just because I do things wrong or don’t know how to do it myself.

I like to collect useless things and “trash”.

I like to collect useless things and trash which makes me an industrial designer. I have saved a lot of useless things at home which pisses my mother off such as the lid from a bottle, tissue tube, lids from glue bottle, all kinds of sticks, parts from my brother’s toy, candy wrapper. The reasons behind it usually are either the pattern, picture, or form is very cute or because it shows a unique way of how the thing works or how it joint. All of this trash is very useful and becomes my resources when I make my models and try to figure out how will my product works.

I like to learn “useless skills”.

I like to learn “useless skills” which makes me an industrial designer. I love the industrial design but I always got passionate about other design fields also. I had taken classes in Fashion design, packaging, shoe design, coding, illustration, and furniture. My friends keep telling me I should use all this time on industrial design. I don’t think so. All of these skills can be applied to industrial design. Coding and mechanic structure makes me how will my products works inside and increase the feasibility. Furniture design makes me understand how woods joint with each other and how the shapes form and gives me manufacturing experience when I do a wood or structure base product, etc. All these “useless skills” make me unique from others.
